Etymology: The ending does most of the work here. Attached to the verb "quiz," the suffix "-er" turns the action into the person who performs it, so a quizzer is someone who quizzes others. That ending is far older than "quiz" itself. It descends from Old English "-ere," which had reached English from Latin "-arius" through Old French "-ier." The Latin suffix already meant a person connected with a thing, and it passed through many languages before ending up on a word coined in English.
