Etymology: "Quadricep" is a back-formation from "quadriceps," the name of the large muscle group at the front of the thigh. The longer word is the older and more formal one: it was borrowed from Latin, where "quadriceps" means "four-headed," built from "quadri-" (four) and "-ceps" (head, from "caput"). The muscle earns the name because it has four distinct parts that join into a single tendon below the kneecap. Back-formation works in reverse. Speakers saw the ending "-ceps" in "quadriceps" and, because English plurals and nouns often end in "-s," treated that final "s" as a plural marker. Dropping it yielded a singular, "quadricep," which then became the everyday name for the muscle, in a sense the reverse of the usual process that adds endings to create words. The shorter form is now common in gyms and sports talk, while "quadriceps" remains the standard anatomical term.
