- The name of a small settlement in the county of Somerset in south-west England, in the Mendip district
Etymology: The spelling "pylle" is a Middle English form of "pill," which came from Old English "pyll" and meant a pool or a creek, often a tidal inlet or a muddy backwater. Its use in English has faded, but it survives in place names. Pill is a village on the Avon estuary near Bristol, and Pilling in Lancashire is a village near the coast, both named for the watery ground around them. The word is unrelated to the familiar "pill" of medicine, which comes from Latin "pilula," a diminutive of "pila," meaning "ball." The two words only look alike by coincidence of spelling.
