Purveyaunce

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The act of supplying or providing what is necessary or needed
  2. A provision or arrangement made to ensure something is available or taken care of
  3. The process of delivering goods, services, or resources in response to a demand or requirement

Etymology: The core meaning is foresight. Latin "providere" meant "to see ahead," and it gave Old French "pourveoir," "to provide," the same root that produced English "provide." From there came a noun for the supply of goods that someone had arranged in advance. The sense narrowed under the English crown. Royal officials called purveyors could requisition food, carts and horses for the king's household, often paying little or paying late. The practice became a long-running grievance, and Parliament eventually abolished the royal right under Charles II. Afterward the word survived mainly as a historical term.
