Etymology: "Purpurated" comes from Latin "purpurātus," meaning "clothed in purple." In Rome, purple was the costliest dye in the ancient world, so the Latin word described a person dressed in the robes of rank, and it carried connotations of wealth and high office. English took the sense on board as a technical-sounding adjective, and it now describes something tinged or suffused with purple. The English ending is the simple "-ed," which turns the Latin past participle into a plain English adjective. The Latin "purpurātus" is itself built from "purpura," the word for the purple dye and the cloth made with it, and that dye is the same root behind the English "purple."
