Etymology: Punxsutawney, the Pennsylvania borough famous for its groundhog, takes its name from a language that was spoken in the region long before European settlers arrived. The name comes from Unami, a dialect of the Lenape (Delaware) language, in which it was rendered roughly as "Punkwsutènay." Its literal meaning is "mosquito town," a description that suits the marshy ground the settlement sat on. The Lenape word was adopted into English as the name of the place, and over time its spelling and pronunciation shifted into the form people use today. Settlers and surveyors wrote the name in many ways before a standard spelling took hold, which is typical of place names borrowed from Indigenous languages in North America.
