Part of speech: INVALID

Definitions

  1. A type of South Asian dish composed of rice cooked with various spices and ingredients, often including meat or vegetables
  2. A flavorful preparation of rice that is typically accompanied by various aromatics and can be served as a main course
  3. A rice-based meal that features a blend of spices and can include meats, vegetables, or nuts, commonly enjoyed in Indian and Pakistani cuisine

Etymology: "Pulaos" is the plural of "pulao," a rice dish flavored with aromatics. The word was borrowed from Hindustani, where it appears as "pulāv" or "pulāo," which descends from the Sauraseni Prakrit "pulāga" and ultimately from the Sanskrit "pulāka." That Sanskrit term is probably of Dravidian origin, pointing to languages of southern India as its ultimate source. Pilaf is a doublet of pulao: both come from the same Sanskrit ancestor but reached English by different routes, so they are cousins rather than one word borrowed twice.
