Etymology: "Ptarmigans" is the plural of "ptarmigan", the grouse-family bird whose feathered feet let it walk across snow. The singular comes from Scottish Gaelic "tarmachan", and its origin there is unknown. The spelling with the silent "p" is the surprising part: English writers came to believe the word was Greek, and so inserted a "p" to suggest a link with "ptero-", meaning "wing", a root that has nothing to do with the bird. The bird's name was therefore reshaped by a false assumption about its ancestry. Readers who see "pt-" at the start of the word may reasonably take it as Greek, but the Gaelic form it descends from had no such letters.
