Etymology: "Psychosexually" is a plain formation: the adjective "psychosexual" with the adverbial ending "-ly" added. The adjective itself is built from "psycho-", from Greek "psykhē" meaning "soul" or "mind", and "sexual", from Latin "sexualis", derived from "sexus" (sex). Put together, "psychosexual" describes the mind and the sexual life as a combined field, and the adverb simply says something is done or considered in that way. The term belongs to the modern scientific vocabulary of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when writers on the mind began forming compounds from Greek and Latin roots to name new areas of study. Its use is therefore a product of that period rather than of classical antiquity, and the classical parts were assembled deliberately to describe ideas that the ancient world did not frame in these terms.
