Etymology: "Proteinurias" is simply the plural of "proteinuria", the medical term for protein appearing in urine. That noun is built from "protein" and "-uria", and the second part carries most of the history. "-uria" comes from New Latin, where it was borrowed from Ancient Greek "-ouria", a combining form derived from "oûron", meaning urine, with the verb "ouréō", to urinate, sharing the same root. The Greek ending entered Latin as a learned medical suffix, and English took it over in the same scholarly fashion, so "-uria" appears in many clinical words marking an abnormal substance or condition in the urine. "Protein" is itself a modern coinage, formed in the nineteenth century from Greek "prōteios", meaning primary or of first importance, which is why the two halves join so naturally in a term describing a protein found where it should not be.
