Etymology: In Latin, "promiscuus" described things mixed together without sorting, such as a crowd of people or a jumble of goods. It was built from "pro-," here meaning something like "forth" or "in front," and "miscere," "to mix," which also gave English "miscellaneous" and "mix" itself. The sense was originally about lack of order rather than sex. Its meaning narrowed over time until it came to describe indiscriminate sexual or romantic choices, so the sexual sense is a later specialisation of the older idea of undiscriminating mixing.
