Etymology: Profit has a surprisingly literal core: its Latin ancestor "proficere" meant simply "to go forward," so the idea of gain began as movement onward rather than money in a purse. The Latin noun "profectus" carried the sense of advance, progress, and growth, and only gradually settled on the financial meaning that English now emphasises. Profit passed into Middle English from Old French, and the two words "profect" and "profit" are doublets, both descended from the same Latin source by different routes. "Profiting" is simply the present participle of the verb "profit," formed by adding "-ing" to that base. Its meaning, gaining money from something, is the commercial sense that grew out of the older idea of advancing forward.
