Its Greek parts are "pro", meaning "before", and "kyon", meaning "dog", so the whole name means something like "before the dog". The reference is to the Dog Star, Sirius, which rises just ahead of the constellation Canis Major in the night sky. Early naturalists who gave the animal this name were tying a small nocturnal creature to a bright star that precedes the dog constellation. The word is therefore a compound of two classical Greek elements, and the Greek roots carry the whole story. The animal's association with a dog comes through the star's position, not any canine resemblance, which makes the name more astronomical than zoological. Its mask-like face and climbing skills are not reflected in the word at all.
