Etymology: "Privatism" is a plain English formation: the adjective "private" with the suffix "-ism," which turns a quality or attitude into a named doctrine or practice. The suffix comes from Greek "-ismos" through Latin "-ismus" and entered English in large numbers as a way of naming systems of belief, conduct and orientation. Adding it to "private" produces a word for a whole outlook: the conviction that personal life, individual choice and private enterprise should take precedence over collective or state action. "Private" itself comes from Latin "privatus," meaning "separated off" or "deprived of," the same root that gives "privative." The sense of withdrawal from public life is therefore built into the older word, which is why "privatism" describes a preference for stepping back from shared, governmental concerns toward personal and commercial ones.
