Etymology: Sanskrit "pṛthvī" means "the vast one" or "the broad one," and it was an epithet for the Earth long before it named the planet's surface in English. The adjective root behind it, "pṛthu," means wide, broad or extended, so the Earth was named for its spread rather than for its soil or substance. Vedic hymns use the word as a goddess's name as well as a description, personifying the broad ground that receives rain and bears living things. English has no ordinary connection to this word, but a surprising one does exist: "prithvi" is a doublet of "fold," meaning the two words descend from the same ancient root and have split into separate forms over the centuries. The shared idea of spreading out and flattening, once applied to the broad earth, sits behind both the Sanskrit name and the English word for a layer laid over another.
