Etymology: "Preregistered" is the past form of "preregister," which means to enroll or sign up in advance of a deadline or event. The verb is built from two parts: the prefix "pre-", meaning "before," and "register," which ultimately comes from Latin "registrum," a list or record book. The prefix traces back through Latin "prae" and an older Proto-Italic form, both carrying the same sense of "before" or "in front of." The "register" half took a long road into English. It passed through Medieval Latin and Old French before arriving as a word for an official record, and only later came to mean the act of formally enrolling someone on a list. Adding "pre-" to that act produced a compound that describes a sign-up completed ahead of time.
