Etymology: "Preregister" is a plain formation: the prefix "pre-", meaning "before", attached to "register", which comes from Medieval Latin "registrum" and ultimately from Latin "regesta", things written down. Put together, it means to record or enrol something in advance of the event it concerns. The prefix itself has a longer ancestry than the verb. "Pre-" came into English through Latin "prae", "before, in front of", and a range of older English words built with it, such as "prefix" and "preface", show the same pattern. English speakers can attach "pre-" to nearly any noun or verb, which is why new compounds like this one appear so easily.
Antonyms: unregister, deregister
