Etymology: The spelling "pranke" with a final -e is an older form of "prank," which English used in the sixteenth century, when the verb meant to dress up or adorn oneself, often showily. The sense of a mischievous trick came later, and the verb's original sense of display survives in the phrase "pranked out," meaning dressed up ostentatiously. Its ultimate source is uncertain. Dictionaries record it in English from the later 1500s, with no clearly traceable ancestor in Latin or Greek. Some scholars have suggested links to Low German or Dutch words for showing off, but no connection has been firmly established, so the origin should be treated as unknown.
