Etymology: Poontang is a slang term of uncertain origin, and the most likely candidate is the French "putain", meaning "prostitute." Lexicographer Eric Partridge, writing about the word, judged that it almost certainly descends from that French source. The word then took on a sexual sense and, in its broader use, became a derogatory way of referring to women. Similar forms appear in other languages, which suggests the word may have spread through contact rather than arising in a single place. Jamaican Creole has "punani", meaning female genitalia, and Tagalog has "putang ina", a contemptible-person insult that literally means "prostitute-mother." Both trace back to the same root in Spanish "puta" and French "putain."
