Etymology: "Ponged" is simply the past tense and past participle of "pong", meaning to give off a strong, unpleasant smell. So the story belongs to the base verb. "Pong" is probably borrowed from Romani "pan", meaning "to stink", which fits its informal, slightly comic tone in British English. A separate, more playful thread also feeds into it: the verb may have been shaped by "ping", a sharp sound, through the pairing of "ping" with "pong" in the way two words rhyme and echo each other. The Romani origin is the more likely one, and the sound-play probably reinforced the word rather than creating it.
