Etymology: "Polypathy" is built from two Greek elements: "polys", meaning "many", and "pathos", meaning "suffering" or "disease", which gave English the suffix "-pathy" for a disease or a system of treating disease. Put together, the word describes a state of having many ailments at once, the same root that appears in "sympathy" and "homeopathy." The first half is the more familiar of the two. "Poly-" appears in English words such as "polygon" and "polytheism," and it carries the sense of plurality. The "-pathy" ending is the one that does the medical work, and it is also found in "neuropathy" and "osteopathy." Joined to "poly-", it names the combined presence of several conditions rather than one disease with a single cause.
