Etymology: The root of this word is the Greek "polos," meaning a pivot or axis, the point around which the heavens seem to turn. Through Latin and then French, "polar" came to describe the ends of an axis, such as the Earth's poles and the poles of a magnet. When physicists found that light waves could be oriented in particular directions, they borrowed the magnetic image: a polarized beam was said to have two opposed sides, much as a magnet does. The "-metry" ending comes from Greek "metron," meaning measure, so the word literally means "measuring polarity." It was built on "polarimeter," the instrument that measures how far a substance rotates the plane of polarized light, a property many sugar solutions and biological molecules exhibit.
