Etymology: Podolian is the name of a Ukrainian region and of the people and dialects associated with it, and the word takes its shape from "Podolia" (Ukrainian "Podillia"), a historical land whose name comes from Slavic roots meaning roughly "at the plain" or "lowland" (pod- "under, at the foot of" plus a word for a plain or field). The land lies on the high plain between the Dniester and Southern Bug rivers, so the name describes its geography rather than any ruler or event. The adjective "Podolian" was formed in English by adding the suffix "-ian" to the place name, a pattern used for countless regional adjectives. It is most commonly applied to Podolian cattle, a large white breed of Eastern European origin, whose name follows the same logic: the animals were named for the region where they were developed and widely raised.
