Etymology: Paeon was the physician of the Greek gods. In Homer's "Iliad," he tends Ares after the god is wounded in battle. Greek speakers later used the name "paiōnía" for the flower, presumably because it was valued as a healing plant. Latin took it as "paeonia," and the name passed into Old French as "peonie." The French "pivoine" is a later alteration of that older form, and the reason for the change is uncertain. Its modern spelling and sound differ from the Latin and Greek originals, yet the flower still carries the name of a god's healer.
