Etymology: English "pea" is a back-formation from "pease." Old English borrowed "pise" from Latin "pisa," the plural of "pisum," and for centuries "pease" was treated as a singular noun. Speakers later took the final "s" to be a plural ending and created a new singular, "pea," from it. The Latin "pisum" was itself borrowed from Greek "pison," a word for the pea plant and its seeds. When botanists needed a scientific name for the genus that includes the garden pea, they reached back to the classical Latin term, so the botanical name is simply the ancient word for the same plant.
