Etymology: The pineberry is a blend of "pineapple" and "strawberry," two fruits whose names were each joined to make a new one. The fruit itself is a cultivated strawberry relative with pale, cream-white skin and a flavour said to carry pineapple notes, which is why the name fuses the two. The first half of the word, "pine," comes from the pineapple, despite the fruit having nothing to do with pine trees. Its name is a reference to its pinecone-like appearance, and English speakers later simply shortened it to "pine" in compounds. The second half, "berry," is the strawberry's own element, and the blend keeps the familiar berry ending that marks it as a soft fruit.
