Etymology: The fruit's name is a Spanish word that began as a description of a pine cone. Latin "pinea" meant "pine cone" or the pine-cone-shaped thing, built from "pinus" (pine tree), and Spanish turned it into "piña" for the pine cone. When Europeans encountered the pineapple in the Caribbean, its scaly, cone-like exterior reminded them of the pine cone, so they applied the same name to the tropical fruit. The word was then borrowed into English from Spanish, so the fruit that looks least like a pine tree's product ended up named after one. The Proto-Indo-European roots lie far back in the history of the Latin word and do not explain the fruit itself; the key step is the Spanish transfer from cone to pineapple.
