Piggiest
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions
- The most endearing or charming among swine
- the one holding the greatest degree of childishness or playfulness
- denoting the highest level of greed or indulgence in a cute or affectionate manner in comparison to others
Etymology: "Piggiest" is the superlative of "piggy," the adjective meaning greedy or resembling a pig, so it is the most piggish of a group. The stem is simply "pig," with the suffix "-y" added, and the form is built the way English builds most of its adjectives of this kind: the final "y" is doubled before "-est" is attached, giving "piggy," "piggier," "piggiest." The "-y" suffix did double duty. Attached to a noun, it can make a diminutive, as in "doggy" or "pinky," and it can also form an adjective meaning "having the quality of" the base noun, as in "dirty" or "sandy." "Piggy" draws on both senses, which is why it can be affectionate, as a name for a small animal, or disparaging, as a description of someone's greedy eating.
