Etymology: "Pictured" is the past tense and past participle of "picture," so its history is really the history of the verb's root. "Picture" comes from Latin "pictūra," meaning the art of painting or a painted work, which was built on "pingō," "to paint." Those Latin roots reached English through Middle English, where "picture" was already used for both the act of painting and the finished image. The verb itself grew out of that noun. Once "picture" could name a painting, speakers also used it as a verb meaning to paint or depict something, and "pictured" followed the usual pattern for regular verbs. Its current sense, being represented visually in an image or illustration, is a narrowing of that older idea of depicting by painting.
