Etymology: "Pictorialist" is a plain formation: "pictorial" with the suffix "-ist" attached, meaning a person who practises or adheres to a particular approach. "Pictorial" itself comes from "pictor," the Latin for painter, which gave English "picture" and, through the adjective ending "-al," the sense of something relating to pictures or painting. The suffix does most of the work here. "-ist" marks someone who follows a practice or school of thought, so a pictorialist is one who works in the manner of pictorial photography. In that tradition, photographers aimed to make images that looked like paintings or prints, using soft focus, manipulated printing and composed subjects rather than sharp, literal records.
