Etymology: In ancient Greek, "phylax" meant a guard or watchman, and "phylassein" meant to keep watch over something. The adjective "phylaktikos" describes what does that job, something that guards or protects. English took the same root for a rarer adjective, "phylactic," used in the sense of protecting against harm. The root also produced "phylactery." In Greek, "phylakterion" meant a safeguard or amulet, and the Gospel of Matthew uses it for the small leather boxes that observant Jewish men wore during prayer, which were believed to protect the wearer. English "phylactery" kept that sense of a protective object. A closer cousin is "prophylactic," which adds the Greek prefix "pro-," meaning "before," to give the sense of guarding in advance against something.
