The first element appears in English as "photo-" and the second as "-meter," so the name simply means a light-measurer. Its parts were assembled from classical Greek roots in modern times, not used by the ancient Greeks, who had no such instrument. The "-meter" ending arrived through French "-mètre," which itself came from Greek "métron." English "-meter" has been used for many measuring devices, and "photometer" joined that family as a name for tools that gauge brightness. The word was built from familiar parts, so its meaning is transparent: a measure of light.
