Etymology: In Latin, "perspectus" was the past participle of "perspicere," meaning "to look through" or "to examine thoroughly." The verb combined "per," meaning "through," with "specere," "to look," so its original sense was of seeing clearly all the way through something. The same root gives English "spectacle," "inspect," and "conspicuous," all of which keep the idea of looking closely. The adjective "perspectus" meant "clearly seen" or "well understood," and the sense of an overview that covers many sides of a subject grows naturally from that idea of thorough sight. English took its close relative "perspective" from the Latin noun "perspectiva," meaning the science of optics or the art of seeing things in proportion. The noun "perspectus" with the sense of a comprehensive survey is a rarer English usage, and it reflects the same thorough, seeing-through-to-the-end sense the Latin root carried.
