- A mental view or outlook that affects one's understanding or appreciation of different situations
- The way in which individuals look at issues or events, shaping their opinions and reactions
Etymology: Before it meant a point of view, "perspectiva" was the name for optics. In Latin, the feminine adjective "perspectivus" described things seen clearly, and the noun "perspectiva" referred to the science of vision and how light and distance shape what the eye sees. It came from "perspicere," meaning "to look through" or "to inspect," built from "per-" ("through") and "specere" ("to look"). The leap from seeing to attitude came through the idea of a view. Once the term was tied to the way a scene recedes to a viewer's eye, writers began using it for a vantage point and then for a way of judging a situation. The attitude sense grew out of that literal "looking through" image: a particular stance shapes what one sees and how one interprets it.
