Etymology: Perenties is simply the plural of perentie, the name of Australia's largest lizard, the perentie monitor. The word itself does not come from English or Latin but from an Aboriginal language of central Australia. Its source is given as Dieri "pirrinthi", or another Karnic language, which is a family of Aboriginal languages spoken across the arid interior of South Australia and neighbouring regions. The English word was therefore borrowed from an Indigenous Australian language rather than coined from European roots, which is typical of the many animal and plant names that entered English from Australian languages during and after the colonial period. The name describes a creature that can grow to over two metres long and is well suited to the desert environment where it lives.
