Peaking

Part of speech: verb

Pronunciation: /ˈpiːkɪŋ/

Definitions

  1. Reaching the highest level or summit of a particular state or condition
  2. Experiencing a moment of intense focus or attention that stands out from others
  3. Achieving the utmost point or climax in a process or condition ; reaching a state of greatest concentration or prominence

Etymology: The idea of a peak as a point of maximum intensity sits on top of a much older image: a sharp, pointed thing. Old English "pīc" meant a pike, needle, pin, or pinnacle, and it belongs to a family of words across the Germanic languages. Dutch "piek", Danish and Swedish "pik", and Norwegian "pik" all carry the same sense of a point or summit, so the mountain-top meaning is the original one and the figurative use came later. The English noun first appeared as "peake" and "peek" and survived mainly in place names, where it described sharp hilltops, before the word was reshaped into the form we know. The verb "peak", meaning to reach a maximum, grew out of that noun: a sales figure or a fever climbs to a point and then stops rising, just as a path climbs to a summit. "Peaking" is simply the ongoing form of that verb, describing something in the act of reaching that highest point.
