Etymology: "Peahens" is the plural of "peahen", so it simply names more than one female peafowl. The singular is formed from two older English elements: "pea", a short form of "peafowl" (meaning the peacock or peafowl), and "hen", the ordinary word for a female bird. Put together, "peahen" means a hen of the peafowl family. The first part is the surprise. "Pea" here has nothing to do with the vegetable or the small green seed; it is a shortened, older form of the bird's name, which was in use in Middle English as "pehenne". The same shortening lies behind the other members of the family, such as "peacock" and "peachick". Icelandic has a close parallel, "páhæna", which shows the pairing of bird name and "hen" is a shared pattern in the languages around English.
