Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A large bird known for its colorful plumage and fan-like tail, often associated with beauty and pride

- A beautiful, iridescent bird native to South Asia, commonly recognized for its elaborate courtship display and vibrant colors
Etymology: Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman named this bird between 1595 and 1597. Rather than coin a new term, they reached for the Latin word for peacock, which Europeans already knew, and applied it to the glittering bird they encountered in South Asia. The borrowing was a natural fit. The Latin term had long meant the familiar European peafowl, with its famous eyed tail feathers, so the explorers carried a ready-made name across the sea. Because the new bird was a close relative of that European one, the old Latin label transferred neatly to it, and it has stuck ever since as the scientific name for the genus.
Synonyms: peacock, peafowl
