Etymology: "Pasticcios" is the plural of "pasticcio," a word English borrowed from Italian, where it means a pie or pastry, from "pasta," the same root that gives us "paste." The Italian sense of a mixed or jumbled assemblage carried over into music, where a pasticcio is an opera or work stitched together from pieces by different composers, often with new words fitted to borrowed melodies. The term is a doublet of "pastiche," which came into English through French and shares the same ultimate source. The two words took different routes into the language, so English ended up with both, and they now overlap in meaning, though "pastiche" more often describes deliberate imitation of a style than a patchwork of existing material.
