Etymology: "Pasted" is the past tense of "paste," a verb meaning to fix something with glue. The verb grew out of the noun, which came into Middle English from Old French "paste" (modern "pâte," dough), itself from Late Latin "pasta," and ultimately from the ancient Greek "pastá," a barley porridge seasoned with salt. The Greek root "pássō," to sprinkle or knead, gives the sense of working a mass into a soft, sticky state. That is why the same ancestry produced both a dough and a glue. Middle English already had "pasten," meaning to make a paste of something or to bake in a pastry, so the verb existed long before anyone used it for sticking things together. The glue sense grew out of the idea of spreading a soft, pliable mixture onto a surface.
