Etymology: "Parenthesises" is the third-person singular present form of "parenthesise", a verb meaning to put something in brackets or to enclose it in parentheses. The verb is formed from "parenthesis", which came into English from Greek "parenthesis", meaning a putting in beside, from "parentithenai", to put in beside. The Greek parts are "para", beside, and "en", in, combined with "tithenai", to place. The noun passed into Latin as "parenthesis" before reaching English, where it was used for an interruption in a sentence, and the sense of the punctuation marks came later.
