The base word, "parameter," is itself a mathematical and scientific term built from Greek roots: "para," meaning "beside" or "alongside," and "metron," meaning "measure." Its original sense was a quantity that stays constant within a particular calculation while other quantities vary, a measure running alongside the main variables. "Parametrize" takes that idea and makes it an action: to express something in terms of parameters, or to fix the controlling values that determine how a system behaves.
