Parameters
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- Quantitative or measurable factors that define or limit a system, process, or function; numerical characteristics or values used to specify conditions or set boundaries in various contexts; essential variables or criteria that influence outcomes or behaviors within a defined framework
- Specific measurable elements that determine the nature or behavior of a system or operation; defined variables which establish constraints or conditions in mathematical, scientific, or practical applications; critical criteria used to describe, quantify, or control aspects of a situation or experiment
- Distinct factors or numerical values used to characterize or regulate the operation of a procedure, model, or device; measurable attributes that set the scope or limitations governing a particular situation; important quantities that affect performance, design, or analysis in technical and scientific fields
Etymology: "Parameters" is the plural of "parameter," and the singular has a surprisingly literal beginning: in Ancient Greek, "para-" meant "beside," and "métron" meant "measure," so the pieces describe something measured alongside a main quantity. The word passed into French as "paramètre," and from there it was adopted into English, carrying the mathematical sense of a quantity that fixes the behaviour of a system while other variables change. The word's original sense was not about limits at all. The Greek roots point to a companion measure, a value taken next to the main one, which is why the term became a fitting label for the constants in an equation that set the shape of a curve or the conditions of a process. Only later did the idea of a boundary or constraint attach itself to the plural, so that "parameters" now usually refers to the limits within which something must operate.
