Parameterises
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- To express a set of values or conditions in terms of variables; to describe a system or model by defining its parameters; or to modify a function to include specific variables that determine its behavior
- To outline or specify the necessary factors that define a situation; to represent a mathematical function in terms of distinct variables; or to adjust an equation by including variables that influence outcomes
- To delineate the characteristics of a model through variables; to articulate the components that are necessary for a theoretical framework; or to structure an analysis by identifying its defining variables
Etymology: "Parameterises" is the third-person singular form of "parameterise", a verb meaning to define something in terms of variables, so that its behaviour can be adjusted by changing those inputs. The verb is built from "parameter" and the suffix "-ise", the British spelling of "-ize", which turns a noun into a verb meaning to make or treat in a certain way. "Parameter" itself comes from the Greek "parametron", meaning a measure alongside, from "para" (beside) and "metron" (measure). Mathematicians adopted it for a quantity that fixes the specific members of a family of curves or equations, and computing and engineering later borrowed the idea for settings that control how a system behaves.
