Etymology: "Parahuman" is a compound built from the Greek prefix "para-", meaning "beside" or "alongside," and the English "human." The sense is of something standing next to the human category rather than fully within it: beings that are recognizably people but whose abilities push past ordinary limits. The prefix does most of the work here. English already had many "para-" words, such as "paramedic" and "paranormal," where the prefix signals a close relation to a base concept without being identical to it. Attaching it to "human" produces a term for characters who are human in origin or appearance yet operate in a separate, enhanced category, which is why the word is most often used in discussions of superhero fiction.
