Etymology: Paragenesis is a geologist's coinage built from two Greek elements. "Para-" means "beside" or "alongside," and "genesis" means "origin" or "birth." Put together, the word describes minerals that form side by side, at the same time, rather than one after another in a fixed sequence. The term's value lies in what it refuses to assume. Geologists often pictured a mineral deposit as a series of layers laid down in order, each crystal forming and then being succeeded by the next. Paragenesis names the alternative: several minerals crystallising together from the same fluid, their growth overlapping in time. The prefix does the work of saying "not in succession, but alongside."
