Panamanians
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- The citizens or natives of the Central American nation of Panama, taken as a group of people from that country
- People born in or belonging to Panama, the country that connects North and South America across its isthmus
- Those who are nationals of the Republic of Panama, referring to a collection of individuals from that Central American state
Etymology: "Panamanians" is the plural of "Panamanian", the word for a person from Panama. The noun is built from the country's name, Panama, plus the suffix "-ian", which English uses to form nouns and adjectives denoting a native or inhabitant of a place (as in "Venetian" or "Mexican"). A small "n" is inserted between the two parts, a euphonic addition that makes the word easier to pronounce, since "Panama-ian" would otherwise produce an awkward run of vowels.
