Etymology: "Pamphlet" is the root here, and its story is the more surprising part. The name comes from "Pamphilus", a popular twelfth-century Latin love poem, "Pamphilus, seu de amore", whose short, cheap copies were sold in the streets and so gave their name to any slim, unbound booklet. The "-eer" ending is the familiar agent suffix, which passed through Old French and Latin from a Latin "-arius" meaning one who does or makes a thing. A pamphleteer, then, was originally a writer or seller of these small, cheap booklets before the word took on its political sense. To pamphleteer is simply the verb built from that agent noun, meaning to have produced or spread such leaflets. Its past form "pamphleteered" follows the regular pattern for verbs ending in a vowel sound.
