Etymology: "Palletises" is the third-person singular form of "palletise", a verb meaning to load goods onto pallets. The verb is built from "pallet", the flat wooden or metal platform that lets a forklift or crane lift a stack of boxes as one unit, plus the suffix "-ise", which turns a noun into a verb meaning to treat or equip with that thing. The pattern is simple and productive. English has long used "-ise" (or "-ize") to make verbs such as "computerise" or "hospitalise" from nouns, so "palletise" follows an ordinary route. The base noun "pallet" itself comes from an older word for a straw bed or a small pallet bed, and its later meaning as a shipping platform arose from that original sense of a flat, low support.
