Palletise

Part of speech: verb

Pronunciation: /ˈpælɪtaɪz/

Definitions

  1. To arrange or load items onto a pallet to facilitate easier handling and transportation
  2. The act of organizing products onto a flat platform to prepare them for shipment or storage
  3. Placing goods systematically on a pallet to streamline stacking, moving, and storage processes

Etymology: "Palletise" is a simple formation: it takes "pallet", the flat wooden or metal platform on which goods are stacked for lifting by forklift or crane, and adds the verbal suffix "-ise", which turns a noun into a verb meaning to make or treat something in a certain way. To palletise is therefore to arrange goods onto a pallet so they can be moved as a single unit. The base noun "pallet" has a much older and different life. It descends from Old French "palete", a small shovel or spade, and earlier from Latin "pala", also meaning spade. In English it first named a straw mattress or a small bed, and only later a wooden loading platform. The modern sense grew from the shape of the board itself rather than from any bedding connection, so the word's ancestry runs from garden tools to cargo handling.
